At a young age, kids should learn the importance of taking care of their eyes. More than any other sense- hearing, touch, and smell and taste- sight have the greatest impact on your kid’s development. Always follow the following:
1. Remind them to avoid rubbing their eyes, if they must rub have them use a disposable tissue and wash hands after.
2. Discourage them from reading while lying in bed. It is ideal to keep a 30 centimeter distance between the book and the eyes.
3. Don’t let them watch too much television with the lights turned off. It tires the eyes because of the blinking light. They should be approximately two meters away from the screen.
4. Impose breaks every 30 to 40 minutes when they’re using the computer to rest the eyes.
5. Use lubricant base eye drops to clean the eyes. These are preservative free and can wash away dirt.
It’s never too early to have your kids eyes examined. Eye examinations are recommended by age 6 months for infants and toddlers, at age 3 for preschoolers, and every year for school aged children and young adults. Children with health problems that may put them at risk for eye disease or have a family history of eye problems should have regular appointments with doctor.
